Former $36 Million Vet Identified as Bryan Cook Fill-In

The Kansas City Chiefs not only lost their fourth game of the season in Week 13, but they also suffered concussions to linebacker Drue Tranquill and ankle injuries to safety Bryan Cook.

Cook’s injury was especially troubling because the second-year defensive back seemed to be in a lot of agony as he was being taken off the field. Fortunately, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on December 4 that Cook’s X-ray came back negative, indicating that he did not break his ankle.

However, according to Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame, the starter might be out permanently. “According to a source, Chiefs safety Bryan Cook is expected to miss time, but there’s a chance he’ll be back for the postseason,” Verderame said, noting that the injured reserve

That means Kansas City might need another safety to complement Justin Reid and Mike Edwards, and PJ Green of Fox4 KC has an experienced idea. “Picking up Adrian Amos would not be a bad pickup for the Chiefs if Bryan Cook is out for long period…” Green spoke up.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Amos and the New York Jets “mutually” parted ways on December 2. He is currently a free agent after clearing waivers and will most likely sign with a contending team.

Amos shouldn’t be too expensive at this point in his career. He just signed with the Jets for $1.75 million this summer, but he was previously a $36 million safety with the Green Bay Packers.

Amos, a former fifth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2015, brings 137 career appearances and 125 starts to the table. In his peak, the long-time DB could do it all, but he built a reputation for himself as both a ballhawk and a thumper, with 10 career interceptions and 28 tackles for a loss.

Amos also had an underappreciated amount of pass defenses — 49 credited PDs from 2015 to 2023 — and was an ironman who seldom missed a game throughout his career.

Amos played in all 11 games with the Jets this season before being released, starting three. During that time, he had 23 total tackles and one pass defense.
